@TripHop, spot on post I truly believe once a major airline uses a decent test the others will follow, I think it's a great space to get into
Had to laugh about Aeroflot, I worked at Heathrow in the 90's, now and again Aeroflot would fly in a double decker I'm guessing a Russian made aircraft
The lower deck ( cheap seats ) had not one window on the whole deck
Ultimately testing requirements and standards will be set out by Governments not what IATA recommend.
tim_t20, I agree to a point what your saying, but government's need educating,
This government seems to be keen on PCR because it keeps track on variants
But the whole point of an accurate rapid LFT such as Avacta before boarding an aircraft is to give passengers confidence knowing they're safe and to stop positive cases from entering our borders
Of course Willie will push the use of LFTs, his job requires him to advocate getting some normality back to the airline industry. Ultimately testing requirements and standards will be set out by Governments not what IATA recommend.
Ive just returned from Spain with jet 2, done a LFT in resort the day before flying back (easy to fiddle if you think or know your positive) and a day 2 PCR which was negative. HOWEVER Track and trace rang today, everyone on the planes been flagged to isolate as a passenger tested positive on their day 2 PCR.
I've been back 6 days out and about already...
If Willie Walsh pushes LFT use by his IATA airline members (all major carriers ww) it will be significant as most airline members tend to follow IATA's guidance. There were ca. 4.2 Bn passengers in 2019, we might see half that for a full 2021 with a slow crawl back to 4 Bn by 2023. Certainly 2 or 3 Bn of LFT just for aviation would be great, especially if they decide to buy the best.
triphop, reading that I remember EasyJet Stelios saying:
If you think health and safety is expensive try having an accident.
Not really Big BS. Any airline using a best in class LFT will be able to market itself as one of the most Covid safe carriers around. In a world where for quite some time into the future, people will be wary of being cooped up with a load of unknown others, it will be a massive selling point once these things start getting promoted! Ask yourself a simple question? Covid aside, would you rather fly say Emirates or Aeroflot? I don't even have to wait for your answer! Additionally, where the average female of the species tend to worry more about these matters than their male counterparts, who do you think will be carrying their precious little babies?
Walsh is well connected in the industry having served a CEO of BA and now working at IATA. IATA formulates industry policy and standards in over 100 countries. It's good news that someone so well connected has such positive news on the use of LFTs.
IATA have no ability to impose anything on individual airlines - you can't 'make a deal' with IATA in that sense. Any deals will have to be with individual directly airlines (or their parent group).
Willy Walsh, Director General of IATA
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Air_Transport_Association
""Consisting in 2016 of 290 airlines, primarily major carriers, representing 117 countries, the IATA's member airlines account for carrying approximately 82% of total available seat miles air traffic"
And Alistair has said Avacta are concentrating on large sales to Airlines.
Imagine a deal with IATA ?
HOLY F*CK !
It’s true Vegas. You know it as well really but can’t change your mind now
Yawn big hero same crap you said on sunday
Airlines won’t buy the most expensive LFT. They will get the one that meets regulations at the best price.
First priority- have regulatory approval
Second priority- get the best deal possible
Yes Tim IATA even better, I've been shouting for a long time that we'll be used in the travel industry, a accurate lft is a no brainer over pcr for travel
I think some of you need to read up on what Willie Walsh's role is now - it's not within BA/IAG...
Being British Airways, the ideal test for them would also be British made.
I’m sure he said also that you should only take a pcr test if you test positive on an lft
I was working at the same time so didn’t get the whole interview
But he was definitely on radio 4
I didn’t get all of it
But they were saying some websites are dodgy because they say an lft is say £22 but in actual fact when you go to press buy it’s more like £125 in some cases
They said the government are letting companies get away with it anx they shouldn’t
Just listening to radio 4
An interview with Willie Walsh (the boss) saying rapid antigen tests are the way to go over pcr if the airline industry is to get back on its feet!
In talks with companies ongoing to supply airlines!!
