CO2 shortages in the Uk about to cause food shortages!
Another food retail boss said that it was a moment of national emergency, adding that he had been told by a prominent abattoir client that they only had four days’ worth of gas left. The gas is used to stun animals before slaughter.
Yet another reason we need to get cellular meat scaled up and commercialised as soon as possible. The farmers in America had to recently cull their own animals when the abattoir workers were off with COVID-19. They were weeping and wailing on the news when the had to shoot their pigs, but it’s ok in normal times to delegate that responsibility to a poorly paid slaughter house worker. The good things that will come out of cell ag are going to be fantastic for our planet.
Afternoon Trumpy, I'm sure the many billions of factory farmed animals would argue something a little different, the cows aren't too keen on the bolt gun to the head followed by their throats slitting if the bolt doesn't work (quite often), the pigs aren't keen on their heads being electricuted unless gassing is available and then they fry from inside (excuse the sick pun) as for the chickens and lambs I won't go there. Deforestation is very very bad, but arguably the worst part of the meat industry? - I don't really think so my friend. Future generations will look back on present day animal exploitation as we look back on slavery and say to themselves, did people really do that? Roll on cellular agriculture scale up so we can move away from todays shameful practices. Final Friday rant now over - and breathe.
Yes interesting report, I agree cellular agriculture is going to be more sustainable, better animal welfare ? there will be no farmed animals, only tb infested badgers roaming the countryside (now that`s a horrible death) a few foxes , we may get a few otters to bugger up the rivers, some wolves and a few bears , just to make the countryside as unsafe as our cities.
Another important point about cultured meat is it causes zero deforestation! Arguably the worst part of the meat industry is the rainforest deforestation caused by having to grow so much soy crops for animal feed.

This is quite a complex issue but essentially my view is that you can decarbonise the production of cultured meat via local renewables or in countries where the carbon intensity of the national elec grid is very low. However you cannot avoid the methane emissions from livestock
We are bound to get more many more reports of this nature. Especially once profits of big multinationals with a stake in meat become threatened. We've seen it with tobacco and oil. The benefit is that people can see right through these hit pieces these days!

And no method has yet been developed to ensure that cellular meat contains crucial micronutrients, such as vitamin B12 and iron, that are specific to animal products. According to the Meat Atlas report, “a rapid shift from conventional meat to cell-based meat seems improbable in the near future.
Cellular meat will be far superior in every way to traditional meat - no antibiotics, no fecal, contamination, e-coli and all the other nasties associated with our current meat production and slaughter system. All the vitamins and micro nutrients will be dialled in as part of the growth recipe for cell ag - in fact you could add epa, dha, iodine and any/all other vital human required nutrients/vitamins our bodies need. It 'could' become a real superfood - lab developed, but a superfood non the less. Animals provide B12 only because of the grubs and bugs they eat, it's not built in to the meat as the animal grows. My morning bran flakes are fortified with B12 so what a load of baloney that argument is. Some people really need to educate themselves a whole lot more about what they put inside their bodies and perhaps we wouldn't have the world wide health and obesity epidemic we now have.
I do get frustrated with those in the animal agriculture industry who spout such rubbish. Adam Henson and the cuddly BBC countryfile presenters constantly dressing up animal farming to be what it really isn't. We love our animals as they sit on a bale of hay in the sunshine hugging a new born lamb - show the veiwers the kill floor six months down the line and the brutality of a barbaric system to see where there meat really comes from.
Apologies for my Friday rant but some people get my goat. The animal industry will do what the cigarette industry did for years - peddle doubt in the minds of the foolish and keep pushing their agenda to eek a few more years out of a system that should have been outlawed years ago.

That article is very poorly put together and I wouldn’t read much into it. Very questionable arguments with distinct lack of scientific insight. Clearly a lobby piece. The reality of the sustainable transition is that, with a completely decarbonised electricity system, energy intensity is not an issue. Water, waste and land use with respect to traditional agriculture is much more so.
In terms of limiting emissions for our climate’s sake, we have to stop methane emissions now as they are more potent on the timescale that we have to avoid the worst effects of climate change. The article is talking nonsense about timeframe, all emissions must be halted from a net zero perspective and I see that being plausible with cell ag and near impossible with traditional agriculture.

We may get a diffrent carcinogenic aspect of meat through sterile conditions potentially. Although this is hypothetical on my part.
I believe I and RWT have discussed this before.

From the previous studies I looked at, it depends on the energy sourse being used to produce cultured meat. The implicit assumption is that such cultured meat will use renewable enegery (however, this is not a given). With methane, while it does spend less time in the atmosphere, because livestock rearing is a cycle it may as well treat it as a constant factor if the variable it is based upon is continious.

Sterile enviroment, so less of a consideration in the sense of COVID. Actually, this may be a problem in itself as people don't realise that you may want some pathogens in order for your immune system to function properly. Otherwise, you can get auto-immune disorders, more prone to disease, more likelyhood of allergic reactions, etc.
Don't even believe the news particularly. Simply as a laymen I can see falseness in it already. They say it is unclear whether lab grown meat will have less pathogens? well not really if it is grown in asceptic conditions how can it have pathogens. They say animal husbandry creates methane which stays in the atmosphere for short amount of time well methane heats planet up quicker and triggers feedback loops which create extra C02 plus animals breath so therefore produces CO2 also. They failed to mention technocratic solutions to improve cultured meat further or the ability to take out any carcinogen aspect of meat along with plenty of other benefits I am sure others can think of.
It's long been known that a lot of vegan products are unsustainable compared to traditional farming. I can't see this news making a dent to be honest.
Technology will overcome unsustainability anyway as sustainable is a strong USP and there's always someone at the forefront making eco improvements.
