Ahh, I never connected the dots Paul! Big fan of your Formula One artwork! Was particularly impressed with the Bruce McLaren statue you did a little while back. Perhaps if AML goes the way we'd all like I'd be able to commission a piece :D
No worries! Easily done.
I had an F1 driver commission me for a painting once - when he received it he was shocked as it was so small. He'd told me cm when he meant inches! I 'might' have told the whole team about it lol. Then painted another. Anyone can do it ;o)
My apologies, seem to have gotten numbers wrong between feet and meters. A Senna can stop in 37.4m. Still only 5 meters more or 12% further. Which given the weight differences is still impressive. My point stands. Thank you @Pau1Oz
@ReeceHWhite that is categorically impossible. A McLaren Senna is near half the weight of a DBX, and set the record for fastest stopping production car ever!
carbon brakes do not last forever I can assure you of that - 5k a corner
For anyone concerned about the brakes checkout Carlow's review video on YouTube and skip to 5:45. There is no need for carbons. 70-0 in 42m (137ft) which if I'm correct. Is 1 foot more than a McLaren Senna.
There are benefits to carbon @George20.... considerably lighter than large steel discs, and will last as long as you're likely to keep the car. They're hellish expensive.... but considering the 20kg or so you're not lugging around permanently and that cost saving in fuel, and their elimination of replacement costs - I suspect over the life of a vehicle it's about neutral.
And when warm they most definitely stop a bit better.
I forgot to add to that at the fear of looking foolish, response is also down to friction materials too!
Yes, ultimately braking all comes down to tyres. Aside from braking response which comes down to the hydraulic system, the actual braking force is easy to modify at the design stage through a variety of different changes.
It reinforces someone’s earlier comment that top gear found that the braking systems on ‘performance’ cars were better which mostly comes down to higher tyre grip (as a result of tyre stiffness, width and compound).
Obviously the AML designers considered all of this at a concept stage so there is a reason behind the decision they have made, although the general public aren’t likely to ever know it ;)
There is no benefit to carbon brakes unless you are braking repeatedly from higher speeds. Why would people be doing that in SUVs? The people who like cars and want to drive fast will buy Vantages and DBSs. Carbon brakes are overhyped by wannabe racing drivers and in truth even GT3 cars don’t use carbons! Expensive to replace and only marginally better than a good set of ventilated steels!
Urus has carbon as standard... just to clarify.
AML should at least give it as an option though IMO.
Steel/carbon is not what makes a great braking system. Super/GT cars that are tweaked for the track generally go from carbon back to steel ;o).
I've spent a day round Imola in an Urus - and true, tyre temp is the limiting factor rather than brakes - the brakes will always take more. But you're never, ever going to get anywhere near that on the road.
Carbon brakes on the road can be a bit dodgy... when wet/cold you really do have to stamp on them to stop the first time.
Exactly, it's all about the sp!!
The real boost to the SP will be when AML publish the sales figures which one would expect after the order book increases as a result of positive reviews. Would expect a price of >£1 on that day
SP may go down for today after RNS... as day traders believe on 'sell' the news.
Yes I think so. Great to have seen the SP rally over the past couple of weeks
I think she is taking about the SP not having breaks lol
ATISHA,
What are you talking about? no reviewer has stated that
Agree with you Lucasax, it’s an option I hope they considered. As I mentioned earlier, it would be a good optional extra to boost profit. Would definitely appeal to the average punter
Well, the brakes aren't working here, whether carbon or steel.
I’m aware of the fundamentals. I’m not referring to Rory Reid or Harry Metcalfe or anyone for that matter. Im just saying rest in class have options & it makes sense to be comparable on all levels does it not? Better for a heavier car. Porsche has tungsten carbide which is a great compromise, Bentley optional carbon & Urus carbon ceramics at the front. I’m just suggesting there should be an option when your spanking that much on a car.
On a review many years ago Jeremy Clarkson when reviewing breaks compared different cars breaking distances. The conclusion was that the better quality cars when breaking from 100 mph far out performs any other Standard car. I’m sure the breaks on the DBX are excellent.
Agree with not having Carbon Discs, I haven't seen the Roy Reid review but if he is the Chap on Top Gear a few years ago, he wasn't any good at reviewing high performance cars, better at granny cars :-)
Agree with everything you have said. Was quite frustrated listening to that segment. I find people hear the word ‘carbon’ and assume it’s better without knowing the fundamentals
Carbon brakes is all Rory Reid kept banging on about during his review. Carbon brakes on a GT - SUV is an utter waste of time and money. This car is not designed or is highly unlikely to ever be used on a track so I am not sure what the point of AML doing test drives around Silverstone was all about. For all road driving steel brakes are superior to Carbon brakes. They provide better brake feel, do not need to be heated to provide optimal braking and are far far cheaper to replace. Even under emergency braking steel brakes normally perform similarly to Carbon brakes, it's only under track that heat soak starts to cause brake fad where Carbons are better.
