Polyus GoldΒ releases preliminary operating results for 1H 2009 and announces theΒ successful completionΒ ofΒ the Titimukhta project.Β
OJSC Polyus GoldΒ (RTS, MICEX and LSE - PLZL), Russia's leadingΒ gold producer, todayΒ releasesΒ theΒ operatingΒ results forΒ the first six months of 2009.Β
During theΒ period under reviewΒ the Group produced 14.9 tonnes (477 k oz) of refined gold, compared to 17.4 tonnes (559 k oz) of the metal in the same period of the previous year. TheΒ 14%Β decreaseΒ in production resulted from the reductionΒ inΒ the average gold grade ofΒ sulphide ore processed atΒ theΒ Olimpiada mine from 4.1 g/t to 3.5 g/tΒ while processing of this type of ores increased from 1.9 million tonnes in the first six months of 2008 to 3.6 million tonnes in theΒ same period of 2009.
The CompanyΒ retainsΒ its production target for the year 2009 at 40 tonnes (1.3 m oz),Β which givesΒ approximately 5% year-on-year increase.Β
InΒ the first half ofΒ 2009 the Group's production units moved 23.2 million cubic meters of total rock, compared to 24.4 million cubic meters of total rock moved in the same period of 2008.
During the period underΒ review Polyus'Β businessΒ units mined 7,258 thousand tonnes of ore, which is a 121-% year-on-year increaseΒ (3,286 thousand tonnes in 1H 08). Ore processing in the first six months of 2009 demonstrated aΒ 33-%Β year-on-yearΒ growth - from 4,994 thousand tonnes in 1H 2008 to 6,638 thousand tonnes in 1H 2009.Β
According to preliminary estimates, the Company'sΒ gold salesΒ revenues in accordance with IFRS in the first six months of 2009 amounted to USDΒ 440 million (unaudited), compared to USD 506 millionΒ (unaudited)Β in 1H 2008. The reduction inΒ gold salesΒ revenues was a result of decreased production and sales volumesΒ of gold. In the first six months of 2009Β sales volumesΒ amounted to 14.9 tonnes (477 k oz), compared to 17.4 tonnes (559 k oz)Β inΒ the same period of the previous year. Weighted-average gold selling price amounted to USD 922.5Β per oz, compared to USD 908.7 per oz in 1H 2008.
Successful completionΒ of the Titimukhta project
In the period under review, as it was planned,Β anotherΒ project of the Company's long-term production facilities development programme wasΒ successfully completed: theΒ developmentΒ of theΒ production facilities to mineΒ theΒ Titimukhta depositΒ inΒ theΒ Krasnoyarsk region.Β
OnΒ January 20th, 2009, theΒ positive opinionΒ of GlavGosExpertizaΒ (Federal State Enterprise Senior Department of State Expertise)Β was received, and in AprilΒ 2009 Mill-1 ofΒ theΒ Olimpiada mine began the processing of the ores from the Titimukhta deposit.Β In April - June 2009 the millΒ processed 231.8 thousand tonnes of Titimukhta'sΒ ores. The refined gold production from these ores amounted to 0.54 tonnes (17 k oz).
The Titimukhta deposit is located 9 km to the North-West ofΒ theΒ Olimpiada mine.Β JORC proved and probable reserves of the deposit amount to 2.2 million ounces at 3.3 g/t.Β Due to the immediate proximity of the deposit toΒ theΒ Olimpiada mine, the Company has a unique opportunity to use available production capacities of Olimpiada to mineΒ theΒ Titimukhta deposit.Β For this purposes, in 2008 the CompanyΒ carried out the reconstruction of Mill-1 of Olimpiada.Β TheΒ projectedΒ capacity was increased to 2.2 million tonnes of ore per annumΒ with a projected recovery rate of 88%. TheΒ totalΒ approvedΒ budget forΒ capital expendituresΒ into the projectΒ equals toΒ RUR 2.6 billion. As at the end of the reporting periodΒ almostΒ 70% of thisΒ amountΒ has been drawnΒ in line with the approved capital expenditures program.Β InΒ 2009-2010 the Group plans to complete construction of the camp, drain system of the pit, tailing dam, as well as the modernization of power gridsΒ within the bounds of the budget.

Group's units' operating results for 1H 2009
Olimpiada mineΒ (Krasnoyarsk region)
The refined gold production from ores mined at the Group's key production unit -Β theΒ Olimpiada mine inΒ theΒ Krasnoyarsk region, during the first six months of 2009 amounted to 10.6 tonnes (342 k oz), compared to 14.0Β tonnes (449 k oz) in the same period of 2008. The decreaseΒ in productionΒ isΒ relatedΒ to fact thatΒ 1.2 tonnesΒ of Dore gold had been delivered to the refining plant and had not been refined in the reporting period. As of June 30, 2009 the balance of non-refined gold was equal to 1.242 tonnesΒ (39.9 k oz).Β The decrease in production was alsoΒ due to theΒ reduction ofΒ averageΒ gold grade, which resulted from theΒ completedΒ switchΒ to processing of sulphide ores.
Β
Kuranakh mine (the RepublicΒ of SakhaΒ (Yakutia))
During the period under review 2.3 tonnes (74 k oz) of refined gold were produced from ores of the Kuranakh group of deposits, as compared toΒ 2.1 tonnes (68 k oz) in the first six months of 2008. The growth of production resulted from the increase in gold grade ofΒ theΒ ore processed.
InΒ theΒ periodΒ underΒ reviewΒ the reconstructionΒ continued at the Kuranakh mine, aimed at increasing the plant's ore processing capacity from 3.6 to 4.5 million tonnes per annum. The reconstruction is expected to be completed inΒ theΒ 3Q 2009.Β
ZapadnoyeΒ mineΒ (IrkutskΒ region)
DuringΒ theΒ firstΒ sixΒ monthsΒ ofΒ 2009Β theΒ ZapadnoyeΒ mine'sΒ productionΒ wasΒ atΒ theΒ sameΒ levelΒ asΒ inΒ 1HΒ 2008Β - 0.34 tonnes (11 k oz).Β
AlluvialsΒ (IrkutskΒ region)
TheΒ 10%Β increaseΒ inΒ productionΒ atΒ alluvialΒ depositsΒ inΒ theΒ IrkutskΒ regionΒ resultedΒ fromΒ theΒ increaseΒ inΒ volumesΒ ofΒ sandsΒ washed,Β which,Β inΒ itsΒ turn,Β wasΒ dueΒ toΒ ahead-of-schedule completion of seasonal repair works and early start of the operations.Β
Project development in 1H 2009
Blagodatnoye deposit (Krasnoyarsk region)
In the period under review the construction of one of the Group's largest new production units -Β theΒ Blagodatnoye mine - carried on.Β As at the end of the period, the readiness of all key plant's facilitiesΒ exceededΒ 60%.Β
DuringΒ theΒ reportingΒ periodΒ equipment assembling continued in the main building and the hydrometallurgical workshop of the future mill, the construction of the coal power plant and other production entities was carried on. Mine equipment supply continued. Particularly,Β sixΒ CAT-785 trucks haveΒ been supplied to the site. Preparatory mining works continued, total rock moved amounting to 2,156.4 thousand m3.Β
VerninskoyeΒ depositΒ (IrkutskΒ region)
InΒ MayΒ 2009Β theΒ positiveΒ opinionΒ fromΒ GlavGosExpertizaΒ (TheΒ FederalΒ StateΒ EnterpriseΒ SeniorΒ DepartmentΒ ofΒ StateΒ Expertise)Β wasΒ received for the construction of the gold mine on the Verninskoye deposit inΒ theΒ Irkutsk region. TheΒ constructionΒ works,Β which had beenΒ suspendedΒ atΒ theΒ endΒ ofΒ 2008,Β were recommenced following the receipt of theΒ opinion. The mine launch isΒ planned forΒ 2011.Β
Natalkinskoye depositΒ (Magadan region)
In March 2009 the Board of Directors of OJSC Polyus Gold approvedΒ aΒ new project to develop the Group's largest gold deposit - NatalkinskoyeΒ -Β which consists ofΒ 3 stages of the mine's development. In AprilΒ 2009Β aΒ consortiumΒ of engineering designing companies, headed byΒ St.Petersburg-based companyΒ PeterGORProject,,Β beganΒ updatingΒ of theΒ project documentation.Β
AΒ pilot plant was launched at the deposit, in order to developΒ the processing technology of the future Natalkinskoye mine. On May 7thΒ of 2009 theΒ first gold was smelted at thisΒ pilot plant.Β
