Equity markets experienced another volatile month asuncertainty over future interest rate movements mounted. The US dollarstrengthened throughout much of the period, while the Turkish lira and SouthAfrican rand suffered sharp reversals mid-month. Trading in the variable equitystrategy suffered losses. Notwithstanding modest gains in the healthcare sector,the style was undermined by a decline in consumer focused stocks. The majorityof losses borne by the style were by US focused strategies, whereas Asianfocused strategies recovered slightly on the back of rallying prices towardsmonth end. Performance by the multi-strategy style was positive, boosted byreturns from natural gas trading. However, modest losses on the back of eventsin the US offset some of the gains. Elsewhere, relative value approaches posteda close to flat return, making some profits on the back of higher equityvolatility.
