Global equity marketsmade significant gains in October as the Dow Jones Industrial Average reachedrecord levels. Zinc prices also rose to all-time highs while oil fell belowUS$60 per barrel. Commodity & trading strategies were strongly positive aftercapturing the upside with long positions in metals, wheat and corn. Equity hedgewas fairly flat despite managers benefiting from rising equity markets,particularly with long positions in the consumer discretionary, technology andhealthcare sectors. Event driven generated a solid return on the back of specialsituation equity plays and merger arbitrage opportunities. Multi-strategy wasalso positive over the month, benefiting from natural resources themes, relativevalue and event driven trades. Relative value was relatively flat althoughmanagers investing in credit opportunities capitalised as credit spreadstightened.
