Crude oil prices fell byclose to 10% and there were further concerns over the slowdown in the US housingmarket. Despite this, equity markets had a sterling month with a host of indicesclimbing to multi-year highs. Commodity & trading strategies suffered as strongtrend reversals in energy and equity markets negatively affected performance.Equity hedge posted a gain as managers benefited from a drop in gasoline prices,which gave relief to holdings in related equities, while strong private equityinterest in the technology sector drove prices higher. Event driven generated aprofit as European managers performed well due to favourable stock-specificevents. Multi-strategy was the main detractor to performance, suffering asAmaranth International Ltd posted losses on long natural gas trades. Relativevalue realised a gain as managers focusing on structured credit and convertiblearbitrage performed well. Variable equity posted the greatest gains aslong-biased US equity focused managers took advantage of rallying equitymarkets.
