Proof of performance additive viability

Gelion (AIM: GELN), the Anglo-Australian battery storage innovator, announces a significant milestone for its Performance Additives division's development programme. The programme's objective is to prove up the benefits of incorporating Gelion's performance additive particles to enable sulfur cathodes to be paired to existing lithium-ion and lithium-ion silicon battery anode technologies, improving overall lithium-ion battery safety, energy density and cost.

The ultimate aim is to replace current lithium-ion cathode technologies in the majority of markets globally with Gelion's sulfur cathode technology.

A lithium-ion silicon sulfur ('LiSiS') battery has a maximum theoretical capacity approximately twice that of a typical lithium-ion NMC (Nickel, Manganese, Cobalt) battery. This means that even at 50% loss of capacity a LiSiS cell still has the same capacity as a new current lithium-ion cell.

When pairing Gelion's sulfur cathodes with the latest lithium silicon anodes, the resultant LiSiS battery as compared to current lithion-ion batteries can be expected to be a much safer (reduced flammability), much lower cost battery (NMC is the main cost component in current li-ion batteries) and would double the range of an EV due to its higher energy density.

Gelion's half-cell sulfur cathode technology has now reached 300 usage cycles at less than 20% capacity degradation. This result proves the viability of Gelion's additives. Furthermore, Gelion has developed ahead of schedule electrolyte formulations that enable successful pairing of lithium silicon anodes with its sulfur cathodes, overcoming the problem of common sulfur-compatible electrolytes decomposing the lithium anode's graphite.

Together, these achievements accelerate the development of Gelion's full LiSiS cells in a substantive manner, such that work towards a commercially viable full cell solution can begin two years ahead of plan.

John Wood, Chief Executive of Gelion commented: "We are delighted to have achieved this outcome two years ahead of our original timeline. The lithium-ion silicon sulfur battery programme provides the path to enabling a safe, high-energy density and lower cost battery, which is more effective than the best lithium-ion batteries currently available and a very exciting opportunity for Gelion."
