As an aside Jamjar, Openreach have commissioned new cable recovery equipment that removes the wiring but leaves the cable casing intact..to be reused as a macro duct as it were..pretty ingenious I'd say....

I read on here the other day someone saying it can't be pulled out, but it can and is all the time...Openreach even created cable recovery teams that mainly work nights...much of the cable is huge trunk cabling that is laid in access tunnels below big towns and cities. London has its own special team that operate vehicles like the ones you see on train platforms with mail in them. The last I heard they were pulling out 750 million worth annually.
