After spending years at sea both in the Royal Navy and merchant navy as a 2nd engineer, I can assure people that things are a lot different these days, I recall when everything went over the side, whether it was gash, sewage, oil or bilge, nowadays the parameters have changed allowing certain amounts of waste to be discharged overboard, measured in ppm, so very low readings to satisfy the environmentalists ( rightly so ), sewage is passed through treatment plant with effluent which “eats” the sewage leaving potable water on discharge , apparently you can drink it!!, ( never tried ), bilge/oil are forced through osmosis plant separating the oil from water , discharging the oil into tanks which are emptied by tanker ashore, heavy penalties are issued if the above is not adhered to!!
