Spot prices for the commodity used to make steel this month climbed above $US150 ($A200) for the first time since 2013. As of Tuesday night, prices had climbed to $US176 ($A233) a tonne or levels unseen since 2011. As recently as May, iron ore was worth just $US80 a metric tonne. The Pilotage of Amapá operates from Itacoatiara until the exit of the Amazon River by the north bar. In March, the Navy updated the nautical chart of the region, which presented some stretches from the 80s. The renewal of the cartography revealed a deeper channel in the muddy stretch of the northern bar, the most challenging for the passage of more loaded ships.
In addition to regularly probing the depths of the rivers in the Amazon, piloting installed tide gauges in the north bar, allowing high-precision crossings in more tidal windows. The results of investments in bathymetry and in the tide table are verified in the gains of the maximum authorized draft (submerged part of the vessels), which went from 11.50 meters to 11.70 meters, in 2018, and to 11.90 meters in 2020 (in tests). Every twenty centimeters a ship carries another two thousand tons (approximately one hundred trucks).

Another pilotage investment was the survey of the surroundings of Ilha de Santana, in front of the port, which indicates the possibility of a route for the arrival of large bulk carriers. Today, vessels up to 203 meters in length (Handysize) turn in the evolution basin to dock, but the area prevents the maneuver of larger ships.
With the new route, the ships will already line up with the port berths, eliminating the need to turn in the basin. This will allow bulk carriers to enter the 235-meter range (Panamax), with two more cargo holds, bringing significant gains in productivity.
In order to allow the simulations to have the maximum realism, the private terminals contracted a mathematical modeling of the currents of the Santana channel (study of water flow during all tides), in addition to an extensive work of measuring the currents on site. There were 529 passes of a vessel with the latest generation ADCP (Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler) equipment.

The construction of two new Private Use Terminals (TUP) in Amapá was authorized at the end of last year, by the National Waterway Transport Agency (ANTAQ) and the Ministry of Infrastructure (MINFRA). With that, the Amapá Logistics Platform has up to five years, starting in 2020, to complete the works in the municipality of Santana.
The expectation is that the Liquid Bulk Terminal of Amapá (TGLA) and the Bulk Terminal of Amapá (TGA) will drive the economy and generate jobs during the works. From the moment of operation, the state of Amapá enters the grain export logistics route.

Construction of bulk carrier terminal in AP enters testing phase in simulator
The construction project for two new port terminals in Amapá - a bulk carrier and a fuel terminal - enters the simulator testing phase. The unit chosen for this is a reference in simulations of new port operations in the country, the Tanque de Provas Numerico laboratory of the Polytechnic School of USP (University of São Paulo), which opened its doors to debate the future of Amapá port logistics. Experts are simulating the entry of larger ships in the Port of Santana and in two private terminals that will be built in the district of Anauerapucu, in the municipality of Santana.
Several local and national authorities participate in the events, such as the president of the Mixed Parliamentary Front in Defense of Northern Ports, federal deputy Leda Sadala (AVANTE / AP), alternate senator Paulo Albuquerque (PSD / AP), the mayor of Santana Ofirney Sadala , the president of Companhia Docas de Santana, Glauco Cei, the prosecutor André Luís Azevedo, of the Comarca de Santana, the commander of the Captaincy of the Ports of Amapá, frigate captain Carlos Augusto de Souza Junior, in addition to the president of the Council National Pilotage (CONAPRA), Ricardo Falcão - who works in Amapá.
Following the norm of the World Association of Maritime Transport Infrastructure (PIANC), endorsed by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), seven pilots participate in the maneuvers at USP, contributing to the anticipation of problems and the definition of operational limits.
“The presence of piloting in the simulations ensures more optimized and safe projects, contributing to port development. Since 2012, 200 pilots have participated in 164 simulations prior to the implementation of new ports and operations in the country ”, says Ricardo Falcão.
With the potential to become a port distribution hub, Arco Norte is considered promising for the flow of agribusiness production in the Midwest, given its proximity to the Panama Canal, which shortens the trip to China, and recent investments by Pilotage in Amapá, the Brazilian Navy and the Federal Government.
This production arrives by the Madeira River to Itacoatiara (AM) or by the BR-163 to Miritituba (PA), from where it follows in barges along the Tapajós River to Santarém (PA), Santana (AP) or Barcarena (PA). The BR-163 highway was recently completed by the government.
