No it’s not. Why is the shorting interest reasonably static then? I think it’s because institutions are no longer holding and the shares are being held mainly by PIs.

What kind of seasoned investor would start a short position after it has dropped the level it has. The short money has mainly been made.

Starting a short now would be the equivalent a of a long getting spiked.

I'm not suggesting that a short bet would end up in a TR1. I'm suggesting if big institutions shorts were offsetting there risk in long positions then if we used your example of 1 & 0.1 we might have had a TR1 in the past regarding their long holding. If that makes sense.

On a spread bet I'm not sure why the broker would be holding the shares on the other side of the bet?

Whenever I listen to the likes of Jim Chanos on CNBC they usually have complete conviction in their position and they've usually done absolutely ruthless amounts of research. These CINE shorts have been holding a long time as well - I think if they were offsetting long positions we would have had TR1s or they would have shown up on the share register.

Imulhare - serious question - do you honestly believe sand grove, new Holland capital, etc, are paying the type of fees you keep posting? Do you believe they are likely to borrow their shares from a retail platform like IB?

Plus I’d be interested to know which other retail platforms trading in the UK offer such a service and have shares to borrow.

If you can tell me it would be much appreciated because as far as I can see the main stream brokers don’t offer any facility for PIs to short shares, certainly not in the UK unless it’s through a spread bet or CFD through the likes of IG.

Listen to it’s not my job to teach everyone how the stock market works. However I will take umbrage when I see posters try and lead others up the garden path when their view/opinion has little basis in reality.

I probably shouldn’t bother but there’s that much misinformation on these forums I just can’t help myself.
