The reason for IAG and Rolls-Royce’s underperformance isn’t hard to fathom. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic brought international travel to a virtual standstill in early 2020 and flight volumes have struggled to recover ever since.
That has been bad news for airline operators like IAG but also their suppliers, including Rolls-Royce. A large part of the manufacturer’s business revolved around airplane engines. As travel dried up, demand for selling and servicing engines disappeared too.
British Airways-owner IAG worst FTSE 100 stock of 2020. This can't have helped.

Covid lockdowns ‘may force Bank of England into negative rates’
The Bank of England could pull the trigger on negative interest rates if strict coronavirus restrictions are extended well into the new year, leading economists have warned.
Interest rates are at record lows of 0.1%, leaving rate-setters with little room to move and raising the prospect of negative rates in the UK for the first time.

Despite doubts that negative rates would be adopted, economists warned that they could “become a very real possibility” if strict tier 4 restrictions lasted until Easter in an effort to contain the new strain of the virus. The government has refused to rule out prolonging tier 4 curbs until April.
Negative rates would wipe out the paltry returns on deposits with banks and building societies, and could theoretically see.....

Military personnel being deployed to California to combat coronavirus
From CNN's Ryan Browne
At least 75 US Army and Air Force medical personnel have been deployed to California to assist in the pandemic response.
“At the request of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, approximately 75 U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force military medical personnel deployed to California as part of a Department of Defense COVID-19 response operation,” a statement from the Army said on Monday.
The latest situation: Since the Thanksgiving holiday, California has faced a surge of Covid-19 infections unparalleled across the United States, leading to continued daily record highs in hospitalizations and deaths.
Most of the state remains under stay at home orders triggered by a region's intensive care unit capacity falling below 15%. According to the state Department of Public Health, intensive care unit bed capacity in both the San Joaquin Valley and Southern California regions are at 0%, and it's likely the stay home orders will be extended for most of the state.
