US To Require Negative Covid-19 Test From UK Air Passengers
Fri, 25th Dec 2020 10:18
(Alliance News) - The US will require airline passengers from the UK to produce a negative Covid-19 test before their flight, in response to a new variant of coronavirus.
It is the latest country to announce new travel restrictions because of the variant spreading in the UK and elsewhere.
Airline passengers from the UK will need negative tests within three days of their trip and to provide the results to the airline, the Centres for Disease Control & Prevention said in a statement.
The agency said the order will come into effect on Monday.
Airlines must deny boarding to any passenger who does not get a test, the CDC said.
The agency said because of travel restrictions in place since March, air travel to the US from the UK is already down by 90%.
Last weekend, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the new variant of coronavirus seemed to spread more easily than earlier ones and was moving rapidly through England. Dozens of countries have since barred flights from the UK.
But he stressed there is "no evidence to suggest it is more lethal or causes more severe illness", or that vaccines will be less effective against it.
This week, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said three airlines with scheduled flights from London to New York — British Airways, Delta and Virgin Atlantic — had agreed to require passengers to take a test before they get on the plane.
United Airlines on Thursday agreed to do the same for its flights to Newark, New Jersey.
The UK has been under considerable pressure since the word of the new variant was made public. Some 40 countries imposed travel bans, leaving the nation increasingly isolated, after Johnson warned that the new variant might be 70% more contagious.
Alliance News) - Cargo workers at British Airways will strike from Friday until January 2 over a pay row, with a new coronavirus strain already delaying goods arriving in the UK.
Around 850 workers will strike, affecting transportation of fresh food and other items flown by IAG Cargo, a spokesman for the Unite union said Thursday.
International Consolidated Airlines Group SA is the parent group of BA.
Unite said BA cargo staff, mainly based at London's Heathrow airport, faced cuts to pay of up to 25%, or thousands of pounds per worker.
"The nine-day strike will cause severe disruption to the company's ability to bring goods into the UK," a Unite statement said.Â
"The strike will potentially cause further disruption to the airline as importers have been seeking alternative ways to bring goods into the UK, in an attempt to avoid the chaos and disruption currently occurring at the country's ports," it added.
Can't think about what to buy your loved one for Christmas?
How about a British Airways drinks trolley? A First Class cabin bread basket or slippers, perhaps? Or even a hot towel (available cold)?
On Monday, the cash-strapped airline began selling off thousands of items of surplus stock, from champagne flutes to bedding.
Other items include an insulated box from a Boeing 747 kitchen, yours for £75, and serving trays - £10 for five.
The move comes months after BA decided to auction some of its precious artwork hanging in offices and airport lounges, including a £1m-plus work by Bridget Riley.
BA's profits have evaporated and the airline is making thousands of job cuts because of the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on air travel.

Last month, BA's parent company IAG reported a £5.1bn loss for the first nine months of 2020, a dramatic reverse from the £1.6bn profit made during the same period in 2019.
But the latest sale is not just because it needs to save every penny, the airline says.
Changes in the mix of aircraft fleet and in-cabin service, plus the likelihood that BA will be a slimmer operation until air travel picks up, mean its warehouses are full of items that will never be used.
Rolls-Royce Share Price 2021 Forecast – Buy, Hold, Sell?
Why did Rolls-Royce stock rise: RR share price jumped from October as investors reacted to multiple catalysts. First, investors welcomed the company’s dilutive fundraising that improved its overall balance sheet.
Second, they cheered the new coronavirus vaccines that improved the possibility of a return-to-growth for global travel. Third, the possibility – and the eventual – Brexit agreement improved the macro picture for the company. Finally, the management said that business condition was improving, which boosted investor confidence.
is Rolls-Royce out of the woods: Rolls-Royce faces some significant risks. For one, its income in 2021 will still be low considering that many airlines are still in trouble. Still, investors are banking on a slow and eventual recovery. Also, the company is facing significant risks if global central banks start the tightening process. Most importantly, there are still risks about the unresolved Brexit issues.

British drugmaker AstraZeneca Plc told Reuters on Tuesday its COVID-19 vaccine should be effective against the new coronavirus variant, adding that studies were under way to fully probe the impact of the mutation. So they can't guarantee anything. The jury is still out I'm afraid. And how many countries around the world have band UK airlines from flying there?

Coronavirus HORROR: Millions more in England face Tier Four
A senior Whitehall source told Express.co.uk: “We are ruling nothing out, the new strain is of serious concern. Tier 4 appears to not be strong enough."
The source stressed we could see new measures which would essentially be “adding another level onto Tier 4, so like a Tier 5.”
Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick also acknowledged "it may be necessary to take further action" to curb rising infection levels.
He said: "The Government's Covid operations committee is meeting later today to review further evidence.
"We keep this under review, we are constantly hearing from our scientific advisers about what we should do."

Airline passenger traffic dropped by an estimated 67% in 2020 compared to the previous year as the pandemic took its toll on

Airline passenger traffic dropped by an estimated 67% in 2020 compared to the previous year as the pandemic took its toll on the sector, according to an industry analyst.
Jeremy Bowen, chief executive of aviation analyst Cirium, said there was no dressing up the fact the year had been a "catastrophe for the airline industry".
"We have seen 21 years of consistent passenger growth wiped out in the matter of a few months," he said.
Mr Bowen said there had been half the flights of 2019 and just a third of the passengers.
"At the moment we are seeing international travel is down everywhere in the world but the region which is boosted quite heavily by domestic travel is Asia/Pacific, particularly China," he said.
