Interesting you say that, saw that Lachlan was being primed to take over from Rupert - I get the impression that they are about building empires, surely he would want to make his name. Armed with Billions and a good knowledge of the UK market, could make sense. Does this mean you are tempted to get in, if not now what would your tipping point (ITV ref :) ) be?

I didn't mention anyone directly by name. Presume we are all grown-ups, but the seeming need to make ones self feel better by pulled down someone else is not an attractive trait. We all know the downside with Tom, but the majority of us do not feel the need to pick it apart - it is a waste of time and effort. TR, on a separate point, actually not sure you are right about charging for ITV content (or at least for just ITV content), I think the future may be a UK Netflix challenger with multiple collaborators. Once you know the demographic of the users ITV (and other commercial providers) could use their undoubted strength in advertising to deliver targeted advertising. I think something like that as a model could really work. Carefully managed advertising being the key, e.g. never more than 45 secs (premium) advertising per half hour content or something similar (unless you upgrade to premium)

Tom E is undoubtedly a genuine ITV owner, who does post occasion interesting comments. There appears to be 2/3 other posters who is some cases appear to mimic his name, who pick apart everything he does. Not sure why you have the time or inclination to do so, but it comes across IMHO as petty and disruptive.

Saw a recent report that valued ETO's back catalogue of programs being worth in the region of 1Bn. Does anyone have a similar value for ITV's back catalogue of programs?

Those numbers appear reasonable. Agree that to me, they seem a touch weak....

Not at all saying it will impact ITV (but it could) As part of the deal, the company will pay Liberty Global �10.6bn in cash, which the US business said would "provide significant additional flexibility to optimise growth and shareholder returns".

I am not new, but I have not changed my user name in that time either. Not going to go into all the history to back up my comment, suffice to say I hope this bb can focus on the stock and not the posters. I particular appreciate negative sentiment, with good, well thought out evidence. All imo.

Netflix and the dominant new medium, which is why they will be discussed on BBs of similar areas. You have to see it is relevant. It has 117m users worldwide, content, delivery and pricing are all excellent. That all said I still think ITV has a strong future for the reasons I have previously given and think it'd ours moving in the right direction buying content producers. This is an obvious not to the fact it thinks it's transitional tv model will change. Anyway, we are all entitled to opinions. Good luck with whatever you decide to do! :)

Maybe not a direct competitor, but certainly a disruptor imo. I actually agree with your viewpoint. The ITV bashing is well overdone. 14 compound years of the current divi returns your initial capital and they as a company have already started to diversify more into production (which is acknowledgement of the challenges that are coming). AND current advertising generates a lot of cash year on year.....low multiples as well.

Very naive to ignore the rise of Netflix. If it reduces ITV audience or more worryingly the underlying way we consume content it will impact on share prices. I have bought another tranche of ITV shares so, based upon past performance, fully expect the share price to dive. :) On a more serious note, I still think that ITV on a valuation level compares favourably to other content producers. It is acknowledged that the 'disruptors' (in particular) need new quality content and are willing to pay for it, so should benefit. Plus whilst the linear TV model is in decline, it won;t happen overnight, so in the meantime, happy to take the profit that advertising brings in year-on-year.

Yeah, does sound like we are on the same page. The risk is the advertising revenue coming in long-term as viewers switch. If I was the CEO I would try and drive more live sporting events, people want to watch live and also interactive shows (think quizzes or game shows with people using phones/tablets to get involved). I think ITV will not disappear, maybe it will continue to lose overall audience, but I still suspect the majority of households someone comes in from work and put on the TV, normally starting on ITV or BBC and then decides if to watch Netflix or Skysports / whatever, often if nothing else is on.

Hi Wigan I believe you are mistaken in your facts, although perhaps not the underlying point. The advertising side makes good profits, when NAR drops so does the overall profit that ITV makes (it appears that costs on this side are largely fixed). The studio business bring in roughly the same amount of turnover as the traditional side of the business but makes a much lower profit. The risk for sure is if this model is slowly dying out and are ITV moving enough to mitigate against this. The plus is that this does generate cash (profit unlike Netflix's massive losses but really good future prospects) and can keep paying dividend. I would love to see ITV produce a real blockbuster of a series, one with worldwide appeal (GoT or Walking Dead type) and see what happens to the shares then. All in my opinion obviously! :)

Thanks for your message Tom I am a long time reader and current holder of ITV, I didn't buy yesterday, but not because of what you or Norab said. Actually prefer alternative views to mine as I often think these allow me to learn from someone else's viewpoint and improves my all-round understanding (which I outlined yesterday). You are obviously emotionally and actually invested in ITV and there is nothing wrong with you expressing a positive opinion. I try and apply a balance to both positive and negative sentiment and hopefully come up with what I think is the right answer. thanks again

I agree viewing habits have changed but ITV can be part of that through the hub and other oot interests in other countries. However, in my experience a lot of this content is streamed as a top-up to standard TV. Plus as an advertiser only ITV gives you the 5m+ commercial audiences. You are right though we are seeing a move away from traditional viewing. The other side is that ITV is moving more and more to production, this has the potential to give the tech companies what they are really looking for 'the killer app' TV program.
