Forgot.... to add
It’s only an actual loss if you sell at a loss or they lose it for you (ie...going bust, etc).
And.... obviously...
It’s only a gain if you sell in profit.
All obvious above but sometimes it’s just worth remembering.
When COVID first hit us and shares plummeted, I lost about 25k in value in about a week, because of panic selling. I held, at a loss only in value. Didn’t sell out. My thoughts, right or wrong, were that this is a one off crazy thing happening, not financial like 2007/8, and therefore to recover. If I bailed, I would have had so much less to “play” with (I’ve not got a huge sum to play with) and took the choice to ride it. To recoup 25k loss with a much smaller pot I personally thought at the time that it would be far more difficult to than my shares simply to recover. As it is, over the months, some recovered quicker than others that then allowed me to free up some capital and start “playing around” again.
Hindsight comes to the fore as ever. In a weird way, you could say I made money by it simply recovering. Just 2 of my shares still down with 1 nearly there.
Gl whatever you decide.....your choice though, not ours
Hope this kind of helps.
