An interesting article from Peter Gittins, The Conversation.
"The UK’s farmers are getting old, says Peter Gittins. The average age is 59; 40% are over 65. To attract younger blood, the government is temporarily offering lump-sum exit payments of up to £100,000 to those prepared to sell, rent or give away their land. Given the “challenging economic environment” – the average hill farmer made just £15,000 last year and four million European farms shut between 2005 and 2015 – some may happily take a cheque, but for many farming is a lifestyle choice. And since government subsidies are likely to continue, they may not end up better off. Finally, while the move could entice young, entrepreneurial farmers into the sector, the scheme could also benefit neighboring farmers or investors seeking to diversify. Taking the plunge will not be easy for newcomers, either. Thanks to Brexit, the cost of living crisis and the planned replacement of farm subsidies with new grants rewarding environmental sustainability (a potential “bureaucratic nightmare”), there are many issues to consider. Significant start-up capital is needed, mistakes will be made, and then there’s the loss of large numbers of experienced farmers with their “vital” knowledge. Newcomers face an uncertain future."
An old but interesting insight...https://www.megabuyte.com/ceo-hub/article/5e73a06b590801000b52a2c3/wandisco-would-be-a-joke--if-it-wasn-t-so-serious
I am neutral on the subject.
"...the latest investor presentation from cellular agriculture company Agronomics (ANIC:AIM) illustrates, the environmental and health implications of animal husbandry are severe, with 18% of all anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions coming from animal agriculture. That’s more than all forms of transport combined."
