US markets continue to surge on tariff news

US markets have rallied on the news that President Trump is pausing his higher so-called reciprocal tariffs on all countries, except for China.

As of 14:45 EDT (19:45 BST), here's how US indexes are looking:

S&P 500 has surged 7.5%

Nasdaq is up 9.4%

Dow Jones is up 6%

We should see a reversal of sorts tomorrow.

It's nothing more than a buying opportunity. It will bounce back, it always does. That said the hard part is correctly predicting the bottom then having enough spare in the tank to wait it out until things start to turn. After all, the minerals in the ground ain't going anywhere.

Paul Volcker’s interest rate shocks in the early 1980’s reshaped the American economy pushing manufacturing into freefall and redirecting investment into finance and property, which started what became the credit bubble of the 1990s and 2000s. The heady days of globalisation brought with them re-ordering of who does what. The big winner in that re-ordering was China since they now make everything.

The Nixon shock in the 70’s, the Volcker/Reagan shock on the mid 80’s and now the Trump shock in the 20’s. It's simply the Americans changing the rules of the game to stay on top.
