Yes, mpox (monkeypox) can be tested for using a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test. This test analyzes a viral swab taken from a skin lesion, such as a vesicle or ulcer, to detect the monkeypox virus (MPXV). To collect the sample, a healthcare provider will use a swab to rub vigorously across the lesion(s), taking swabs from more than one lesion. The swabs are then sent to a lab for testing, and results are usually available in 2-4 days.
