Volkswagen e-Delivery trucks will be equipped with CATL's LFP (lithium iron phosphate) batteries
Chinese battery manufacturer Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. (CATL) just scored another important order - this time from Volkswagen Caminhões e Ônibus (part of Volkswagen Group) for commercial vehicles in Latin America.
The newly signed long-term strategic cooperation agreement between CATL and VWCO will initially focus on all-electric Volkswagen e-Delivery trucks (11 and 14-ton version), that from 2020 will be produced in Brazil.
"CATL is going to offer the comprehensive battery solutions for the electrification of VWCO, including battery development, manufacturing, as well as recycle and secondary use. According to the agreement, the partnership will be started with e-Delivery, which is VWCO's electric vehicle series as well as the first 100% electric powered light truck in Latin America. Equipped with CATL's standard LFP (lithium iron phosphate) battery packs, e-Delivery 11 and 14-ton models will be launched to global market soon in 2020."

Interestingly, CATL will supply the LFP (lithium iron phosphate) type of batteries, which in the latest generation, utilizing CATL's cell–to-pack (CTP) technology can offer an energy density of 160 Wh/kg.
We guess that in the case of trucks, especially distribution models with not a lot of range, the LFP are a perfect fit, especially if there is a chance to lower cost per kWh compared to high-energy-density types of cells.

According to Property Week, the Department for International Trade has been approaching local enterprise partnerships in Britain, requesting information on sites of 130 acres or more, apparently in the hope of enticing electric car manufacturers.

One site that has reportedly been approached in recent weeks about whether it could hold a gigafactory is Gravity, a 650-acre location near Bristol which was once the site of a BAE factory.
Musk has previously considered the UK as a European manufacturing location before, but cited Brexit uncertainty as a reason for later deciding to build a plant in Germany.
Tesla is already in the process of building a gigafactory outside Berlin which will be used for the assembly of the new Model Y electric vehicle.
The Times reports that Musk’s private jet is believed to have arrived at Luton just after midday on Wednesday, and he then likely took a helicopter across southern England to tour the Gravity site.
The jet then took off from Luton early on Thursday morning, after spending just 19-hours on the ground.

Tesla has filed with the Chinese government for approval to sell a new version of the Model 3 with cheaper lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries.


Early on, Tesla adopted its own version of the energy-dense NCA battery cell for its electric vehicles, which went against most of the industry who uses NCM cells.
There have been reports stating that Tesla is switching to NCM battery cells for its Chinese Model 3 vehicles built at Gigafactory Shanghai.
The vehicles built in Shanghai are Tesla’s first without Panasonic-made battery cells in them.
Tesla contracted LG Chem and CATL to make the batteries for the vehicles being built at its new factory.
Earlier this year, we’ve learned that they might even use CATL’s lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, which is much less popular in the auto industry and mainly used in some Chinese electric vehicles due its lower-energy density and lower cost.
