Statement after markets closed on Friday @ 16:35pm.
Thank you for all for messages, this week has been hectic so I apologise for not replying to everyone individually. To say that I am proud of Team Resolute is an understatement!
We compleated on the Belfast acquisition on the 5th December 2019 ( adding Appledore, Methil and Arnish in a busy eighteen month period) what a three year journey, it has not been plain sailing and we have had the support and encouragement from so many people.
Our team have put the hard yards in on FSS with our partners (Navantia and BMT) to get to preferred bidder status, we remained focused on closing this out.
Lots of mis information has been distributed about our bid but the facts are clear:-
- 100% UK Design by global experts BMT
- 100% UK steel
- A minimum of 60% of U.K. content, which is not uncommon with other projects of this type.
- ÂŁ77m to be invested between Belfast and Appledore to make them state of the art shipyards, giving us the ability to capitalise on the ÂŁ500m pa Export market in addition to massive Renewable opportunities.
- Technology transfer from Navantia - so we can learn how to deliver ships on time and budget. They have the experience that we don’t, this is a key component in our relationship.
- Thousands of other supply chain jobs from the re cap and the actual project.
- Our unions GMB and Unite welcomed the news and challenged the biased approach with Ian Waddel this week.
- Majority of the blocks will be built in the U.K.
- All 3 ships consolidated in Belfast.
- All 3 ships integrated in Belfast.
- Masssive commitment to UK suppliers, numerous events through out the U.K. during the competition to ensure as many U.K. companies as possible could be included in our bid.
- 900 Jobs in Belfast
- 300 Jobs in Appledore
- 200 Apprenticeships and Graduate oppertunities.
The notion that we want to capitalise on global exports without working in partnership with global companies is bizarre at best. We can’t have our cake and eat it. We need to collaborate internationally to ensure the very best ships are delivered for the Royal Navy in a timely fashion.
The outcome on the FSS contract is historic for shipbuilding when a third shipbuilding stream has been introduced in the U.K. But it’s far bigger than that, the new National Shipbuilding strategy has kicked in, the pipeline has 150 ships that can be built in our yards. We will now see all the yards in the UK coming together to deliver on this and won’t be able to do it without the supply chain and welcoming and finding a way to allow new suppliers into the industry (this has been a barrier for decades)
Given the volume of work that is in the pipeline I believe we will now see improved collaboration throughout the industry that we have not seen before.
