The problem with big phama's are that they don't do any leg work. So take few risk at the early stages. Once they kown you have a viable product then they are willing to buy you out. So it's win win; but there are more potential slips even after buying out. There are no guarantees on success. Big phamas has huge overheads and not prepared to get bad results and hence reluctant to invest. So most small cos really suffers and this is specially true in UK.
