Taverham, I do get your point about having heating running in two houses being an unnecessary expense.

Having had some experience of this particular topic, the most cost effective way to manage during the colder months is to have a wifi based heating system that you can switch on, when there is a sudden cold spell. I am sure you know about such thangs anyway, but there are lots of different types of products on the market which enable you to control the heating remotely.
