For those lucky enough to have a parent (and maybe even a grandparent?) born in an EU country you can get an EU passport and then move to Spain/France/Greece/Cyprus/Italy. If not then you can still spend up to 6 months there, in three month stints.
Why sit on funds for a rainy day or your descendants, when you can improve your quality of life which you are still alive and have your health?
Just get yourself a little pad, like an apartment with a porter on the front door, so keeping the place secure and keeps an eye on the goings-on. Apartments are good as they are low maintenance and more secure than stand alone properties, that typically require more maintenance and upkeep. In Spain there is a huge problem with the 'okupas' squatter, who practically impossible to get rid of.
Having been back in the UK temporarily for few months, I find the general mood in this country quite depressing! On top of that you have the bloody awful weather in the winter, short days and everything here now costs an arm and a leg!
