Coal

Considering the importance of coal-rich mines in Dinajpur and other northern regions of the country, the agency advises reducing coal imports from abroad.

Instead, the report says that there is an opportunity to save foreign currency in the energy sector by using domestically mined coal in thermal power plants.

The agency believes that local renewable energy sources such as biogas plants, wind turbines, and solar panels can be used to create small power grids to meet household and daily electricity and gas demands.

In the letter to the railways minister, Powerchina said it is a state-owned and integrated construction group, having business in Bangladesh since early 1990s.

GCM Resources plc (GCM) has established a coal resource of 572 million tonnes (JORC compliant) near the town of Phulbari in North West Bangladesh. Thermal coal represents 80% of the resource with the remainder being semi-soft coking coal. The coal will be extracted by the open cut mining method. In addition, a variety of co-products (gravel, aggregate, silica sand, kaolin, clay) will be recovered from the overburden.

The scope of works under this Mine Construction Contract includes design, procurement, installation, construction and commissioning of mine infrastructure and overburden removal, dewatering and drainage. It also includes selective mining and stockpiling of valuable industrial mineral co-products that occur in the overburden. These co-products are expected to deliver considerable cashflow for the Project ahead of any coal extraction

In addition to coal, a variety of valuable industrial mineral co-products will be recovered from the overburden which is removed to expose the coal prior to excavation.

Well what's in the overburden that has a big $$$ value? And will make a significant contribution to capex of Phulbari opm.
