Throne,
its not quite that simple, not all shares rise into ex-divi,
some go out of sync, and instead fall towards a bottom at ex-divi.
It is possible to actively trade the good divi paying shares though,
which is what I do, but it does takes some effort,
you have to track the SP and RSI trends,
buying when oversold, selling when overbought.
I'm currently holding DLG, LGEN, BP, BARC, RIO, and PHNX as trades,
and waiting for my exit prices to bank the profit.
All held in a big ISA pot, so no tax issues.
Buy, hold, collect the divi would be easier, but I enjoy trading.
Thanks NSS.
A rather bitter sweet victory for Technical Analysis,
its certainly not where I want to see the SP.
It would be nice to see the buying volume pick up significantly next week,
and the SP start to tick upwards.
But I fear we may continue to be pushed downwards by further selling pressure.
So my guess for next Friday is SP 269 (Fib 78.6, the next level down on my TA),
and wouldn't be surprised if the 262-264 GAP was filled during the week.
I sincerely hope I am very wrong.
I hadn't spotted it before, I had been too focused on more recent price movements.
But,
a 2 point Fib retrace from 28 Oct 20 (low) to 16 Jun 21 (high),
on a 1 day TA chart,
puts the Fib 50 level at SP 263 in the middle of the GAP or NO- GAP at 262 - 264.
I'm staying cautious for now.
Arse? Elbow?
At this point its anyones guess!

Re: Why 283 ?
To me it "feels" like a large portion of the market has been under downward pressure for some weeks.
Lots of "good" shares have been trading sideways having dropped out of ascending channels.
I hold BP at 313 & 308, so like most of us would prefer the SP to rise next week.
If the downward pressure continues then 283 is the next support level on my TA chart at Fib 61.8.

Ideally next week I'd like to see the SP bounce off the lower level of the channel at circa 280-290
and then move back up into the channel.
The GAP at 337 is nicely within the channel now.
For the record my target auto sell is set at SP 335.
RSI is now at 30 (oversold) and the TA looks similar to 02 Feb 21
when the SP bounced off lower level before.
But if the selling continues unabated then the GAP at 262 still concerns me.
The above is just my personal view of the current situation,
in reality it could go either way,
we small fry wont control it.
Always DYOR.
The Oil sector is not alone is being targetted over environmental concerns,
the building industry is now under pressure as well:
"The closure of Sweden's biggest cement factory on environmental grounds could cause up to 400,000 job losses and wipe out the country's GDP growth, according to an alliance of construction bodies."

My current BP TA chart:

Always DYOR
I'm still holding at 313 & 308 and waiting before adding any more.
RSI is currently looking oversold (33).
Might see some support at SP 293-294 (Fib 50).
The bottom of the channel (SP 288-290) certainly looks possible though:

Always DYOR.
Lots of the "good" shares have been trading sideways for a couple of weeks,
it feels like the market senses something ahead.
