Bango Inc. , which provides the technology that powers commerce for businesses targeting the growing Internet market, has released the results of a survey on Web browsing habits of smartphone users.
For the purpose of the survey, Bango (News - Alert) measured the number of mobile visits made in the United States across a sample of Web sites during Q1 and Q2 of 2010, focusing on browsing activity from phones and not on mobile application use.
Mobile web browsing took a tremendous leap between Q1 and Q2, 2010, when the volume of mobile Web browsing from Android Phones in the United States increased by a clear 400 percent, while Apple users remained subdued registering only 13 percent over the same period, indicating a 16 percent decline in market share.
HTC and Sony Ericsson (News - Alert) smartphones showed large volume growth of mobile visits during the same period with 162 percent and 148 percent respectively, indicating an increase of 94 percent and 84 percent in market share.
LG, Motorola (News - Alert) and Samsung all registered an increase in market share and grew by 48 percent, 45 percent and 26 percent for the same period.
The picture changed when only Q2 results were revealed. BlackBerry continued to dominate with the highest volume of mobile Web visits, accounting for 37 percent, a volume increase of over 20 percent from the first quarter. Apple devices followed a little way behind with 26 percent of mobile visits, while HTC (News - Alert), Sony Ericsson, Samsung, LG and Motorola -combined- accounted for a total of 27 percent of mobile Web visits.
Ray Anderson, CEO of Bango summed up the situation and said that even with Apple's new devices in the market, BlackBerry held on to the leading position and would be a safe bet for mobile advertising.
He added that Apple appeared to be losing ground to the latest Android handsets from HTC, while Sony Ericsson (News - Alert), Motorola and Samsung, failed to put up a good show as far as Web browsing was concerned.
