According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), Britons spent an average of £539m online each week in September, out of £5.61bn total sales.
This 9.6pc share is the biggest on record, and is more than three times bigger than the 3pc share back in early 2007. It represents a 30pc increase on a year ago.
The figures were published on the same day that Debenhams said that 7.4pc of all of its sales had come through its internet site, and that it was installing 650 internet kiosks in its department stores to help it persuade high street shoppers, who found a certain product out of stock, to order it online. The move is one of many by retailers to develop a "multi channel" strategy, including encouraging customers to order online and collect in store.
