Phulbari uprising
IN THE name of development, the corporate plan was to turn vast areas in northern Bangladesh into company land for coal mining at the cost of people and the environment. They could not do it because of people’s resistance. Even after 17 years of people’s uprising against a fraud foreign company, Asia Energy, and its open-pit coal mining project, people remain vigilant there.
On August 26, the uprising day, this year, like every year, I was in Phulbari with thousands of peasants, workers, small traders, self-employed, students, men, and women to pay homage to the martyrs of this great struggle and also to meet relatives of them and the people with permanent injuries like Bablu Roy.
The company had fled from the area after the people’s uprising and had changed its name to Global Coal Management. It had been incorporated in the London Stock Exchange Alternative Investment Market, and in the name of GCM Resources PLC, it continues to trade shares in their ‘Phulbari Coal Project’ despite having no valid contract to operate in Phulbari and no permission to mine anywhere in the world. Moreover, they have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Power China to increase its muscle power.
Bangladeshi and British authorities are still protecting this fraud company. With their support, the company has been trying to come back for years. They tried to recreate violence in the area, mobilise criminals against community leaders, and make false accusations against local resistance leaders. But they could not enter the area because the people’s resistance remained strong. This year also, I felt that spirit.
