Whilst I agree with everything you say, a look at the map shows the iffy neighbours Turkey have. I think that Turkey, is to Europe, much like Ukraine (or The Ukraine meaning Boarderlands to Russia) is to the Russians. Therefore a potential Hornets nest for any political alliance.
