PARTNERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES IN THE MINING SECTOR: BHP IMPRESSES KABUSWE WITH CAPACITY BUILDING MODEL FOR EMERGING MINERS
By Lucy Shawa
The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited (BHP) a global mining leader, has expressed interest to share technical expertise with players in Zambia’s mining sector.
During a bilateral meeting with the Zambian delegation at the ongoing Mining Indaba in Cape Town, BHP’s Head of Government Relations, Brenden Augustin, highlighted the company’s Capacity Building Model designed to empower emerging mining companies, including artisanal and small-scale miners, with essential mining expertise.
Mr. Augustin emphasized that BHP aims to extend this initiative to Zambia, which will help address challenges such as informal mining activities and child labor.
He also expressed BHP’s interest in green energy minerals, particularly copper, coal, and fertilizer production, as part of its strategic focus.
The company is currently evaluating potential investment opportunities to partner with the Zambian Government.
BHP is also exploring investment opportunities in the Kalahari and Katanga basin.
Mines and Minerals Development Minister Hon. Paul C. Kabuswe, welcomed BHP’s expression and encouraged the company to utilize data from the ongoing aerial survey conducted by X-Callibur.
He stressed the need for a clear framework to guide collaboration between BHP and the Zambian Government, underscoring Zambia’s commitment to fostering diverse and mutually beneficial partnerships with investors.
BHP, an Australian-based world-leading resources company, continues to explore opportunities to contribute to sustainable mining practices and economic growth in Zambia.
Ministry of Mines Permanent Secretary Dr. Hapenga Kabeta, Zambia National Service Commander, Lieutenant-General Maliti Solochi and other senior Government officials from the Zambian delegation were also part of the meeting.
