So to sell your gain you have to realise some of your original investment. So to raise 20k you’ll be selling around 17k capital and 3k gain (very rough figures).

So each year you would be moving some capital and some gain. Depending on the level of gain you’d likely be able to move a bit at a time but remember the cgt allowance is reducing to 3k from 2024/25.

However, I don’t mind paying tax if necessary because it just means I’ve made good profit.

Also remember if you make losses on other shares you can use them to your advantage. I sold my matad shares and bought back after 30 days for a similar price and got the recovery. Offset the loss and recovered on the same share. Out of market risk but I sold when I was pretty confident they wouldn’t recover within 30 days.
