They were all heroes , ive always said, how many carried out operations that will never be revealed personally because there's still shed loads've missions that are still classified for another 50 years. My dad was a merchant seaman during the latter part of WW11
All I ever found out was he was the gunner, we played lastpost at a funeral for Billie Atkinson 3 years ago, he landed at Normandy picking up wounded soldiers along the way, against orders.
By the time he got to the rendezvous, his truck was rammed, he also helped liberate Auschwitz, he was filmed for the ITV Production 75 shortly before he died.
Mooching I'm good thanks gotta Officer's mess dinner concert for the Rifles next week & a lardy da concert for The Lord Lieutenant the following day, just glad to be back playing.
My boy is an RAMC medic, part of jabs army, been deployed to Cambridge then Northern Ireland. Thankfully there's no conficts at the moment, so I'm able to play the proud father for the time being.
We met General Sir Peter Dr La Billiere. 90 odd years old & still recognised his men by name from the Korean war.
He was guest of honour for a bronze statue unvailling & a play about Fighting Bradfords
From whitton in Durham, they were quite possibly the bravest/craziest family who fought with distinction during WW1
Between them they were awarded
2 Victoria Crosses
2 Military Crosses
And a Distinguished Service Order.
Roland was & still is the youngest ever Brigadier General in British Army History.
Its a fascinating story & it's amazing there's not been a film about them.
