Its a complex donation compared to a regular one. The needle goes into the arm but theres one line meets a junction of 2 more lines. Making 3 lines in total.
The machine filters the platelets from the blood. Then once this is finished, they pump the blood back into your arm. It took me 54 minutes from start to finish.
The good thing about this type if donation is that you only have to wait 3 weeks before you're able to donate again. If you want to donate platelets, you need tell the nurse beforehand.

I nearly lost my arm at work ( angle grinder) i vividly remember the the 1st aider running away when he saw my arm. I said to myself I'm gonna laugh so much about this! Just not right now.
Everytime i see him he's still very apologetic.

They say the Lord loves a trier Sbrace06 ( & yeah i'm very trying ;) At least you gave it a go, i know nurses who can't stand needles & my GP hates the sight of blood & gore.
When i was an undertaker, i was making funeral arrangements with 2 sister's who we're in their mid 90's tbeir 100 yr old brother had been taken ill ( not seen a doctor for 20 odd years) they were saying they've killed him! He was given a blood transfusion because his blood count was dangerously low, when i spoke to the coroner's officer he said the old boy only had about 5 pints of blood, which got me thinking, maybe they had killed him. He lived all those years with 5 pints then he gets an extra pint, which may've put an extra strain on his heart.

Good evening all.
I took the day off today as i had an appointment at Newcastle Blood Donor Centre. Which is a little further up the road from St James' Park.
I really want to highlight my blood group & to pose the question. Do you know what yours is?
Im A-Neg which only approximately 7% of the population has, i was donating my platelets, which some may recall posting before.
Out of the 7% who are A Neg only 50% have a high enough level to safely donate.
Each donation can treat or save 3 adults or 5 children.
Bizarrely my platelets are universal, so they're always in high demand. I was inspired by a photo one day in the donor centre as i was booking my next donation.
There was a beautiful young girl of 17 in the picture, the same age as my daughter at the time.
Unfortunately this poor girl died for want of a platelet transfusion.
So now, i donate as often as possible.
So my message is obvious, maybe you've never donated before or better still, you could be A-Neg too.

Thats mind boggling & my fag packet calculation estimates thats approximately 61.3b in the ground at todays spot price.
By 2040 with an estimated 21 fold increase. I make that 1.281T if it were to be left in the ground till 2040
