Mr Roberts pointed to America's Illumina, a $68bn company operating in a similar field, to illustrate Oxford Nanopore's potential.
"Illumina's genome sequencing can identify the order of 200 to 250 bases at once," he said, referring to the four chemical building blocks that together make up DNA molecules. "Oxford Nanopore’s record so far is four million bases," he said.
