Going back to school science --test for carbon dioxide using a straw to breathe into a sample of lime water(calcium hydroxide)-turns cloudy . This reaction is the formation of calcium carbonate which is a white insoluble solid, the reaction is virtually immediate. Calcium hydroxide is a strong alkali, carbon dioxide forms a weak acid with water vapour ie a neutralisation reaction Nucleation occurs resulting in small crystallites of calcium carbonate of very high surface area,
Providing the calcium and magnesium ions are present in sufficient quantities and a pH gradient exists, then neutralisation reaction will occur. Remember this is a small trial based on the estimated reactivity. this should be equivalent to throwing a worm into the Mersey tunnel.
