The prices of gold and silver rose on Tuesday with gold reaching a new record high, hitting the $2,451 mark, as appetite for safe-haven assets strengthened following the recent comments by the Federal Reserve officials.

Yesterday, Fed Chair Jerome Powell stressed that the central bank will not wait until inflation hits 2% before cutting rates after the latest data showed cooler-than-expected inflation print. Adding to the bullish sentiment, the CME FedWatch Tool showed that traders are 100% certain that the Federal Reserve will lower interest rates by September. The probability of a quarter percentage point cut stands at 93.3%, while there is a 6.7% chance of a half percentage point reduction.

Spot gold surged 1.23% to go for $2,452.51 per ounce at 10:57 am ET and silver gained 1.20% to sell for $31.05 per ounce at the same time. Platinum lost 0.58% to $993.57 per ounce at 10:58 am ET and palladium decreased by 0.79% to go for $935.86 per ounce at the same time.

Mike Ashley's retail empire is set to report profits of up to £550m this week.

The Frasers Group tycoon owns brands including Sports Direct, House of Fraser, Jack Wills and Flannels.

A takeover spree also saw him snap up fast fashion site Missguided and the group has also built stakes in Currys, Boohoo, and Asos.

But much of the group's success is still owed to Sports Direct, which Ashley founded in 1982. The retailer made up more than half of Frasers' £2.8billion revenue in its half year results.

A makeover of its shops and new flagship stores have helped to elevate the brand.

Aarin Chiekrie, of Hargreaves Lansdown, said experts 'have been impressed by early signs' at new stores.

The price of yellow metal touched its highest point since late May after data showed a cooler-than-expected inflation print in the United States on Thursday.

The annual inflation rate arrived at 3% in June, falling from May's reading of 3.3%. The consumer price index, excluding volatile categories of food and energy, saw a slower pace of increase during the reported month compared to the month before. The data showed that the June consumer inflation moved closer to the Federal Reserve's target range, seemingly raising prospects of a possible rate cut in September.

Gold surged 1.52% to sell at $2,407.62 per ounce at 8:44 am ET. Silver soared 2.64% to trade at $31.64 per ounce and platinum gained 1.48% to $1,011.14 per ounce. Palladium jumped 1.64%, going for $995.73 per ounce.
