European shares trade mixed in premarket

European stocks were mixed during premarket trade on Friday as investors digested the latest macroeconomic data from the Eurozone, sparking concerns that the global economic slowdown will continue. Markets reacted to the news that Bank of England will keep its interest rates unchanged and the announcement of St. Louis Federal Reserve Bank President James Bullard, who said that the Fed needn't raise rates to meet job and inflation goals. United States President Donald Trump yesterday also announced that he will not meet his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping before March 1.

The DAX lost 0.02% in premarket trading at 7:54 am CET. The CAC 40 lost 0.01%, while the FTSE 100 rose 0.09% at the same time.

The euro declined 0.03% against the dollar, selling for $1.1338 at 7:58 am CET. At the same time, the pound decreased by 0.02% compared to the greenback, buying $1.2947.

European stocks fall premarket ahead of BoE decision

European stocks were down in premarket trading as investors awaited the Bank of England's (BoE) interest rate decision and digested an array of corporate earnings as UniCredit, Societe Generale, ArcelorMittal, Sanofi and Volvo Cars all posted results before the bell.

The FTSE 100 lost 0.26% premarket, the DAX declined 0.37% and the CAC 40 was down 0.35%.

The euro dipped 0.06% against the dollar to sell for 1.1362 at 7:51 am CET, while the pound traded flat compared to the greenback, going for 1.2935 at 7:52 am CET.

European markets pretrade lower

European stocks traded higher during the premarket on Wednesday, erasing some of the gains made the previous day, made after the United States president's State of the Union address and prior earning reports. French international banking group BNP Paribas reported that its total revenues in the fourth quarter of 2018 were reduced by 3.5% compared to the previous year, while the Norwegian multinational energy company Equinor reported a net operating income increase of 46%for the last year.

The DAX lost 0.08% in the premarket, while the FTSE 100 decreased 0.15% 7:56 am CET. In Paris, the CAC 40 was reduced by 0.19% at the same time.

The euro traded 0.22% lower against the dollar at 8:02 am CET, exchanging hands for $1.1388. The pound lost 0.10% against the greenback, going for $1.2940 concurrently.

Europe mostly higher in premarket ahead of data

European stocks traded mostly higher a few minutes before the opening bell on Tuesday as investors anticipate a fresh set of data coming up after markets open for trading. Composite PMI data for Germany and the European Union will be released later today, as well as the UK services PMI. Additionally, an EU retail sales report will also be posted after the opening bell. On the earnings front, BP reported its quarterly and annual numbers earlier, showing that its full-year profit for 2018 more than doubled compared to the previous year.

The FTSE 100 was trading 0.26% higher shortly before the opening bell, while the DAX gained 0.04% to stay above the flat line. Meanwhile, the CAC 40 was 0.21% higher in premarket. The euro was 0.10% lower against the dollar to sell for 1.1423 at 8:55 am CET, while the pound added 0.05% versus the greenback to go for 1.3045 at the same time.

Seriously this is as good as gold! (Pun intended)

Centamin, the Egyptian gold miners, was tipped in the Sunday Times' Inside the City column. The FTSE 250-listed company has had a mixed run, last year halving in value from above 160p in May before cutting its production guidance due to persistent low grades at its Sukari mine, hitting a low below 85p in September. Last month the company confirmed gold production in 2018 had fallen 13%, despite a 17% increase in the final quarter.

For full year results, which are due later this month, Centamin is expected to pay a dividend of 4.1 cents a share, putting its shares on a yield of 2.7% compared to peers around 4% and 5%. However, the stock is changing hands for just under 11 times earnings, compared to the likes of Fresnillo on a p/e ratio of 17.9. Broker Panmure Gordon have set a target for the shares, which finished last week at 118.35p, at 140p target, seeing many of its problems have been addressed. What's more, the gold price has risen steadily since November, closing last week at $1,317 an ounce.

Gold tops $1,300 first time since June

Market bets that the United States Federal Reserve would halt interest rate increases and slow or cease the runoff of the giant bond portfolio underpinned the prices of precious metals on Friday. Such a move could remove some of the headwinds to economic growth and spur consumer prices, while the asset class is the most conventional shield against inflation and in cases of economic downturn. The spot price of gold advanced above $1,300 per ounce, a level last seen on June 15, helped by strong demand for jewelry in India, but also China, where the seven-day Lunar New Year festival begins on February 4.

Major stock indexes in New York rallied more than 1% parallel to a surge in equities in the Eurozone. US Treasuries suffered considerable losses, pushing yields higher. The Fed meets next week. The yellow metal was 1.5% up at $1,300.36 per ounce at 5:28 pm CET after breaching the strong resistance level. It has held higher than $1,250 per ounce for more than a month and investors will be watching if it can close above the round figure.

Silver jumped 2.42% to $15.69 per ounce, matching the session high, which was last observed on January 15. Platinum rose 2.07% to $819.66, the strongest point in two weeks, and palladium surged 1.35% to $1,377.52 for one troy ounce.

Europe seen higher in premarket after ECB
Markets in Europe traded in the green during the premarket trade following yesterday's decision by the European Central Bank (ECB) to keep interest rates unchanged as investors also digested ECB President Mario Draghi's comments on economic slowdown and claims of the transitory weakness of the economy. Meanwhile, investment incentives were also boosted by strong progress made by the United States and China in their trade talks, a sentiment echoed by US President Donald Trump.

The DAX rose 0.56% while the CAC 40 traded 0.38% higher. Meanwhile, the FTSE 100 added 0.14. The euro increased 0.13% against the US dollar to sell for 1.1322 at 7:56 am CET while it fell 0.28% against the British pound to go for 0.8635 at 7:57 am CET.

UK to scrap online sales tax - report

The United Kingdom will not implement a mooted online sales tax aimed at assisting high street vendors in the country as it would breach European Union rules, according to a report by The Times on Friday.

The British newspaper reported that the financial secretary to the Treasury Mel Stride wrote to the chairwoman of the Treasury select committee Nicky Morgan, pointing out that there was a "high risk" that such a tax would violate the EU’s strict rules on state aid. The United Kingdom's Chancellor of the Exchequer Philip Hammond had previously said in August last year that he was mulling the possibility of taxing online retail players.

Under the terms of British Prime Minister Theresa May's draft withdrawal agreement, the UK would accept a "dynamic alignment" with the EU's state aid rules. However, her withdrawal agreement was emphatically rejected by Parliament in a vote last week, thereby leaving its fate uncertain.
