RE: RNS great news! Rain stopped!26 Mar 2025 08:17
Have to have a balanced view.
The heavy rains in Arequipa have not only cut off the drinking water supply in several areas, but have also caused material damage in several neighbourhoods, such as Paucarpata. One of the most serious incidents occurred in the La Finca neighbourhood, where a hole of almost three metres in diameter opened up in the ground, letting water into several homes and leaving one family homeless. The water washed away everything it could,’ said one neighbour affected by the flooding.
In addition to the sinkholes, creeks burst their banks in several areas of the city, causing flooding and disrupting travel. The main roads were flooded, preventing the passage of vehicles and pedestrians.
According to Peru’s National Meteorological and Hydrological Service (Senamhi), the rains in Arequipa have reached level 4 intensity, which means a high risk of disaster. The worst affected neighbourhoods are Paucarpata, Chiguata and Hunter, where roads have been covered with water and mud, further complicating the situation for the inhabitants of these areas.
