Streeting urged to approve prostate cancer screening on NHS

Rishi Sunak leads alliance of MPs asking Health Secretary to act so men at highest risk are ‘no longer left behind’

Wes Streeting is facing calls from more than 100 MPs to introduce screening for prostate cancer.

The Health Secretary will later this week receive recommendations from the UK National Screening Committee on whether checks should be offered to men at higher risk of the disease.

The ultimate decision lies with Mr Streeting, who has been urged to show “leadership” and introduce targeted screening, even if the committee is cautious.

Former Prime Minister David Cameron has revealed he has been treated for prostate cancer.

Lord Cameron, 59, told the Times newspaper his wife had insisted he go for a check-up after they listened to a BBC radio interview with entrepreneur Nick Jones, who was campaigning for more men to be tested after being diagnosed himself.

The Tory peer had a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test earlier this year, followed by an MRI scan and a biopsy. He was then treated with focal therapy, which targets the area where the tumour is present using methods such as ultrasound waves to destroy cancer cells.

Prostate cancer is thost common cancer in males in the UK, with around 55,000 new cases every year.
