btw - I hope you do not mind that I have been slightly off the subject of trading so far - if this bothers anyone let me know and I will keep it focused. I do not want to spam up the board and irritate people.

T - Yes London does benefit from high-spending visitors but not to the amount that Brits spend abroad. Also, the London visitors do not visit the city for the climate but rather for the shopping/restaurants/ pubs and nightlife most of which is not back open yet. These high-spenders will be just as happy to come to London in September as they would in July - but it is not the same the other way round. UK tourists go abroad for sun sea and sand.
I think that UK govt would be glad to swap all foreign visitors for Brits staying at home this year. You only have to look at how desperate France, Italy and Spain are to get UK tourists back to see how much the brits spend.
I agree about the airlines but I have actually talked to someone in UK govt about this and interestingly the only one they really are about is EasyJet. They think that BA will be ok (it is half Spanish anyway) and they could not give a toss about Ryanair for all the noise Michael O'Leary makes. It is an Irish/European airline that contributes no tax take and it would only be helped as a by-product of helping Easyjet.
Overall, I think that the maths says it is better for the govt to push for staycations and then help Easyjet with state aid if they need to. I believe after July 4th there is nothing stopping them doing that (though I am happy to be corrected if EU state aid law is still in place by then).
Re holidays - I strongly believe that they will contantly find problems with the travel bridges (hence Sturgeon being a "useful idiot" for this reason yesterday).
The reason for this is that I don't think that the govt want us to go on holiday abroad this year as they have just handed over hundreds of billions in furlough money and they would (very sensibly) far rather see this spent on UK hotels bars and restaurants than they would on Spanish, French and Italian ones . I can totally understand why it would stick in their throats for UK govt money to immediately go abroad and so I think that they are going to keep finding reasons to delay it until the end of July or beginning of August when everyone will have decided to stay at home anyway.
They obviously can't admit that they are doing this but if you "follow the money" it makes no sense to do anything else.
Hi Vulneck,
Thank you very much for the kind welcome to the board. Yes, I think that it is fair to say that I have a good few years of trading experience under my belt. However, in recent years I have been tied up with a number of other projects and not had the time to focus on it as much as I would have liked.
I'm currently looking to position myself in post-covid recovery plays to catch them on the rise and trade them as they pull back. I like to do this to complement my long-term (non-trading) holdings.
Still in investigations phase at the moment but will happily share when I find any likely candidates.
Thanks again,
P
Completely agree about the novice traders. Anyone can make money in a rising market so it is a good lesson for them to learn that you actually have to work at it (as long as they do not lose too much). It will make them much better players in the long term.
That said, I think that as we come out of Covid there will be yet another golden period where everything just goes up. It is the cycle of how these things work.
Actually, I have just noticed the date here. With 42 people signing your petition in 6 months it seems that more people agreed with me than you.
Why would you want to ban shorting? It serves an incredibly useful purpose in any investment strategy.
I'll take a look at BMN too.
You can generally short shares by spread betting on IGindex but you are limited to how much you can put on (ie approx £500 pp) when it comes to small cap AIM shares. Often you have to place a number of different trades to get to a level that makes sufficient profit. However the more volume in a stock the easier it is to go higher. HTH
Have the shares been put back into your control yet - ie can you transfer them to another broker?
Yes, this is a slightly strange post.
