The comment regarding Newbury is likely spot on. The company underwent a bit of an internal "hostile" takeover in the engineering division a couple of years back, and the culture under the new management has become incredibly toxic.
They appear to be completely indecisive; the current strategy seems to be mimicking what European telcos were doing years ago—relying on third-party managed solutions rather than internal engineering. That’s a real shame, as their engineering capability used to be Gamma’s key differentiator.
Since the shift, they’ve been bleeding engineering talent. Those who haven't left yet are simply waiting for the next round of redundancies or are actively looking elsewhere (you only have to look at the reviews on Glassdoor).
Because the current leadership has very little grasp of how to run an engineering organisation—outside of spouting buzzwords—I suspect it’s only a matter of time before their recent decisions result in a major incident, whether that's security-related or service failure. It’s probably a blessing that they’ve expanded into Europe; with Germany becoming a major contributor to the bottom line, one can only hope they’re left to get on with it without interference from the UK side.
