Sounds like he's using the Samsung gear which is not as good as the go? I've been playing with the go all weekend and it's a good entry device and will definitely pave the way for greater VR adoption. I took it to a friends BBQ and few people there said they are gonna buy one. Video is good quality but isn't amazing (if you're used to HD for example) but that's not just Melody, it seems to be on every video I've watched across lots all apps. If something is not close to you it has a slight soft blurry edge to it. I was in AVP also and sold EVRH at 3p thinking VR could be another 3DTV but bought back in around 7.5p when I started to believe again. After buying the go I have no doubt that VR is here to stay. This is the first easy to use all in one device, perhaps similar to buying the first iPhone, it will only improve from here.
