“Pub owner Punch Taverns' trading was very tough over Christmas with like-for-like outlet profit from the leased and tenanted business down by approximately 12%. The group added it has increased its support for its licensees from £0.4m per month this time last year to £1.6m per month this year. Beer sales volumes fell by double digit during the 20 weeks to 10 January, it added. Managed estate like-for-like sales were down 2.5% for the 20 weeks, principally driven by improved sales over the Christmas and New Year trading period which were up 1.9% on last year, but operating margin is estimated to be running 5 percentage points lower than last year.”

Citi’s price target for Punch has been reduced from 200p to 60p. The US bank believes conditions will continue to deteriorate for a pub sector already reeling from the effects of the smoking ban and cut-price competition from the supermarkets."

P.S Always remember on such sites, at times, by the “laws of probability” they do make the “correct call” albeit, for the wrong reasons! P.P.S I’ve started training my pet stick insect, - Twiggy III - to pee on potential share winners within the F.T. company lists. He has actually performed reasonably well so far. However, I always have to read the paper first! He has to have quite a few “hit or misses” before he starts, and the paper does get – among other things – a trifle soggy! P.P.P.S. Happy reading, but if you try my particular technique – keep you stick insect on a limited liquid diet! for very obvious reasons!
