People could still be taking rapid tests for Covid in five years time, a senior government scientist has said.
Speaking to MPs, Lucy Chappell, chief scientific adviser at the Department of Health and Social Care, said the government was committed to testing between now and January.
And she told the Commons science and technology committee that there is a "stretchable point between now and five years" where testing could take place.
Business minister Paul Scully has reiterated the government’s hope of scrapping PCR tests for fully vaccinated UK arrivals by the October half-term. said it was "absolutely the aim" to move to cheaper lateral flow tests by the end of next month.
"We’ve got to get the systems in place because we want to move to lateral flow tests to make it easier and cheaper for people to be able to enjoy those holidays at half-term," he told Sky News
Health Secretary Sajid Javid said: “Whether it’s an F1 company developing ventilators for hospitals, our academics developing lifesaving vaccines or a pioneering manufacturer producing lateral flow tests, British innovation and ingenuity has been everywhere you look during this pandemic.
“Our testing programme has already helped us reclaim many of our lost freedoms and it will continue to be at the heart of our efforts, through the Winter Plan, to keep this disease at bay in the colder months to come.”
He said SureScreen tests, which have been partly assembled by Omega Diagnostics in Alva in Scotland, will form an essential part of the government’s rapid testing programme which has made free LFDs available to everyone in the UK.
The transport secretary said test providers had been focused on PCR and were not ready for mass lateral flow testing.
Shapps was answering questions from parliament’s transport committee. Committee member Ben Bradshaw said the government was putting travel’s half-term reboot in danger.
“Why wait until possibly the end of October to switch from PCR to lateral flow tests?” Bradshaw asked. “It is exactly the same companies that provide the Day 2 PCR tests as provide lateral flow tests.
