Hbob. Why should they earn more, public sector employees that is? The private sector does not get the pay, flexible working, pensions and more (OK, not all). Historically the public sector was paid less and received perks as a form of compensation. Now they get both. This is Western world wide. The same union supporters (tend to be left leaning) are likely to be pro low skilled immigration too. They have to be, they are their future needy. The future left voters, well for a while at least. Maggie sealed her biggest beating of labour when she initiated right to buy. Once you own something you are more likely to lean conservative....to conserve. With low skilled immigration comes lower wages and a lack of investment in tech. Why invest in your own expensive workforce when you can just bring in a minimum wage one, and why invest in tech when people can be so cheap? What has Germany done in the last 24 months? Maybe that has suppressed pay rises. Maybe. Oddly Hbob you dabble in shares (capitalist) yet appear to lean left. Eventually you realise you can't square that circle. I have two good friends who are both fans of the unions and lean left. They were ****ging off banks and hedge funds recently. I then asked them if they paid into the local government pension. They, of course, replied yes. Emphatically actually. That sense of entitlement was at the fore. You know, all their rights and no responsibility. I asked them if they knew where the Local Government pension gained it's income from. Guess what, they had no idea. I gave them some insight. The fund invests massively in banks and hedge funds. Did they stop paying into their local government pension? Hmmmm... I will let you guess on that one. Grrrrrr.
