The country currently has around 7,000 MW of coal-based power generation capacity. But all these run on imported coal, which requires a huge amount of foreign currency. The government should develop our domestic coal fields and start production from there. Those power plants should run on local coal. If needed, coal power capacity should be increased.

Rather than spending foreign currency on coal imports, we could use that money to import LNG, thereby supporting industrial growth.

The interim government seems unable to deliver. Public offices remain paralysed, campuses are dead zones, roads are blocked, and no tangible progress is visible. It is time for Dr Yunus to uphold the promise he was entrusted with — to quickly transfer power through a free and fair election. The Consensus Commission already has political agreement on key reforms — justice for the July Massacre, the banning of the Awami League, and constitutional and electoral reform. So why the delay in announcing elections?

This interim government was meant to be short-term. If it overstays, it will become controversial. If a world-renowned figure like Dr Yunus fails to deliver, it risks tarnishing the little trust this nation still holds in any moral leadership.

Let us not forget — Justice Shahabuddin, Justice Habibur Rahman, and Justice Latifur Rahman all held elections within 90 days. Why should Dr Yunus be an exception?

The people want their power back. The only way forward is to announce elections — now.

Instead, it appears to be consolidating control, delaying reforms and governing without a clear mandate from the people. Civil society leaders are warning that this drift may soon ignite a second wave of protests—one far more explosive and disillusioned than the first.

The students who risked and sacrificed their lives for change now feel betrayed. “Nothing has changed,” one protester wrote on social media. “The faces are different, but the system is the same. Or worse,” penned another.

By delaying elections, the interim authority deprives citizens of their right to shape their nation's course. While the interim government has attempted some reforms and garnered international sympathy for its efforts, its Achilles' heel is its lack of electoral legitimacy.

To delay elections is to deny people the power to reflect and to choose. The interim government must now do what it was originally tasked to do: create a level playing field for all political actors, initiate essential reforms to ensure a fair election, and hand over power to an elected government. This process must be time-bound, transparent, and inclusive. It must culminate not in vague promises but in a specific date for the election, announced publicly and adhered to.

Justice demands that we punish the guilty—not everyone who are not directly involved with them. Collective punishment, even when driven by righteous cause, undermines the very legitimacy of transitional justice. History shows that dissolving parties rarely heals nations. It more often deepens fractures, stokes grievances, and makes martyrs of those who once stood accused.

Perhaps worryingly, this move sets a precedent. Today, it's the AL. Tomorrow, it could be any party deemed "unacceptable." Once the door to blanket political bans is opened, it becomes easier to silence dissent and concentrate power under the guise of legality.

They were against a ban plus they are looking for new active members and basically invited former AL members. According to this article the voter list will be completed by June 30. I think the registration process and the update of the voter list are two different things...

The voter registration process will continue until April 11. During this period, those who have been left out can fill in their information online and visit a registration centre to become voters.

Earlier on January 20, the EC started the process of updating the voter list by collecting information through door-to-door visits. This work is scheduled to be completed by June 30.
