You could have a heavy-handed seller who dumps a lot of stock in the morning. The price falls sharply.
Buyers are attracted and come in. If the selling is exhausted, the price will recover sharply, even on relatively light buying.

It's a market.
If the sells push the price down throughout the day, then, of course, by definition, the price does down.
But if, during the day, the sells encourage buyers to come in, ...
So it all depends upon the price at which the trades are done.

Never understood why people believe that more sells than buys during the course of the day should mean the price goes down.
It's all a question of the price at which trades are done.
If the price goes up, sellers will be encouraged and if the price goes down, buyers should emerge.

It's the reason they gave for not buying back in a Q&A earlier this year.

They have since changed their mind but, imho, they still do not want liquidity in the stock to fall to a level that puts off institutions from buying.

Remain of the opinion that they do not want to reduce the effective float too much, given that about 70% of the stock is already in very firm corporate and institutional hands.
