Britain needs an energy production revolution
The energy crisis is, above all, a catastrophe for consumers, who will shortly be forced to choose between shivering in the cold or paying almost three times as much for fuel as they did last winter ...
But the catastrophe of consumption has its roots in a tragedy of production. Energy is the lifeblood of any modern economy. Rather than demanding we use less of it, the Government should be pulling out all the stops to generate more. Given energy’s geopolitical and economic importance, nothing could be more urgent.
In the short term, that should mean encouraging every form of production, including carbon-based – ripping up the various rules that hamper the oil and gas sectors, giving the green light to fracking (astonishingly, the Lib Dems’ Ed Davey remains proud of his central role in killing this off) and, above all, recognising the damage that net zero commitments are wreaking on lives now, having shattered confidence in the long-term investments energy generation requires. The eco-warriors’ fervour has proved self-defeating: nothing will sink the transition to a green economy faster than a popular rebellion against sky-high energy prices...'
