That's because a "buy" isn't necessarily a buy, it's simply a trade executed above the mid-point of the MMs' spread at the time, which can, and does, change at any time.

1/ to let investors buy in more cheaply;

2/ to reduce the downside potential in the event of disappointing news;

3/ to increase the upside potential in the event of good news.
